The Valentine Pencils that The YOOTS! created at our last meeting are a hit! People have scooped up 15 of them so far. Don't forget, if you would like to help out with an art activity during February vacation, let us know and we will give you the details (date/time). Mo Willems Winter Party 12/29

It's almost here! Our annual Winter Party in the Children's Room is scheduled for Thursday, 12/29 from 2-4 PM.

We will need all hands on deck from 1-5PM so mark it on your calendars! Even if you haven't been able to make it to the most recent meetings, we can still use all the help we can get! If you have a friend who might want to join you in helping run our games and craft tables at the event, we'd love to have them too!. Let us know if you can make it that day. Next YOOTS! Meeting 11/3

Our next meeting will be held on Thursday, November 3, 2011. This will be a special night as we are combining our monthly meeting with a volunteer opportunity. We are asking The YOOTS! to arrive by 6:15. At 6:30, we will be having a children's book author visiting the library. Sara Hunter, author of The Lighthouse Santa, will be reading her book to families. She will then discuss the book on a more adult level while the children do an art project and enjoy some cookies. We would like The YOOTS! to help the kids with the art project so that parents and grandparents can talk to the author about the story behind the book. If you can make it early we would LOVE it! The YOOTS! meeting will begin when the author visit is finished. Also, we are planning to have a rehearsal of the Elephant and Piggie skits that we will be performing at our Winter Party in December. We would like to meet on Tuesday, November 8th since there is no school in Weymouth. We are hoping to meet at 2PM. See you on November 3rd at 6:15!

At our last meeting, we discussed our December Party. The theme of the party will be the works of author, Mo Willems. Mo has many great books such as:

Don't let the Pigeon drive the bus, The Pigeon finds a hotdog, Knuffle Bunny, Edwina the dinosaur who didn't know she was extinct, Leonardo the Terrible Monster, Amanda and her Alligator and the Elephant and Piggie Series

We brainstormed a bit about things such as:
Pin the tail on the bunny (A la Knuffle Bunny)
Displaying a live pigeon and perhaps worms (Pigeon books)
Creating a long list of what we and our patrons want (The Pigeon wants a hotdog)
Decorating our inflatable dinosaur to be "Edwina, the dinosaur that didn't know she was extinct)
A "Naked Mole Rat Gets Dressed" Craft
Performing "Elephant and Piggie" play in the Butterfly Room
Remote control vehicles made to look like a bus that the kids could operate

Great ideas! We hope to hear more at our next meeting on September 1st. We also want to get started with some of the craft prep work, so get ready to use some scissors!

We had a great meeting on Thursday, February 3rd! There were 21 YOOTS! in attendance!

We decided that throughout February Vacation, YOOTS! can come in and man the Rokenbok table for our youngest visitors. If you are unfamiliar with Rokenbok, they are remote control vehicles that run on a table. The table is a bit delicate, so the YOOTS! keep watch over it while it is out and help show the little ones what to do. If you have some time to spend, just call us up and let us know when you will be coming in.

We are also planning a Video Game Afternoon on Thursday, February 24th. YOOTS! are invited to come at 1:30 and will have the first hour to themselves. At 2:30, we will open the room up to all kids in grades 1-6. At this time, the YOOTS! will slip into volunteer mode and help us RUN the program. The library has Guitar Hero and Dance Dance Revolution for PS2. Chris may also be able to bring in her Wii. Some of the games that were suggested were: New Super Mario Kart, Wii Sports Resort, Rock Band, Just Dance II etc.

We also discussed an event sponsored by the Weymouth Garden Club called "Books in Bloom".
Anyone who wishes to participate can choose a favorite book and create a display that somehow incorporates flowers with the theme of the book.
It would be great if some of the kids could get involved! Get creative! The creations will be displayed on Friday, February 25 and Saturday, February 26th

We practiced reading through the Red Ribbon and assigned parts to each of the YOOTS! in attendance.
We decided to split the narrator role into several parts. So here are the assignments for our reading on November 2nd:

During our meeting on September 2nd, we had two guests present a volunteering opportunity to our YOOTS! Lyn Frano and Kathy Lavery would like our help in a dramatic reading of the book, "The Red Ribbon" by John Lasne. The YOOTS! will help read the book on November 2nd and will also help with a craft designed for preschoolers as well as kids in grades 1, 2 and 3. Durning our next meeting on October 7th we will be assigning parts and working on that.

July 1st Meeting Minutes

We had an excellent meeting last night! We spent some time practicing the Elephant and Piggie Play, "There's a bird on your head!". We took turns, with everyone reading different parts and helping with props and page turning.

We've decided to meet again on Wednesday, July 28th from 7-8pm to practice some more.

At our next official YOOTS! meeting on Thursday, August 5th from 7-8pm, we will continue with our rehearsals.

The play itself will be held on Thursday, August 12th at 10 AM. Since the play is short, we can plan on doing it multiple times between 10 and 11 AM. Depending on how many YOOTS! can make it, we will be rotating parts so everyone gets a chance to perform if they would like.

If you are interested in being a part of this play, it is important the you try to make it to these meetings. If you can't make both of them, attending either one of them would be OK too.

We have also set a tentative date of Thursday, August 26th for a video game night for the YOOTS! and other kids who are going into grades 4, 5 or 6. We haven't finalized the date yet, but we will be shooting for a time of 6-8pm. Details to follow.

Here is the text for our Earth Day Skit on Thursday, April 22. We will be giving several performances between 1:30 and 3:00 . Feel free to arrive a bit early Please wear a solid color T-Shirt. The colors we need are listed below with each character. Bring several colors if you can as we will be trading roles. If you can't find a solid shirt, you might try wearing one inside out.

The Flower, the Rain and the Sun

Characters:

Narrator- BLACK SHIRT
Flower- RED SHIRT
Flowers (s)- OTHER COLOR SHIRTS ( pink, blue, green, purple, orange)
Rain-GREY SHIRT
Sunshine-YELLOW SHIRT

SCRIPT:

Narrator: There once was a little flower who lived hidden away in her little home under the earth. She was all alone and thought she had everything she needed there.

Rain: TAP, TAP, TAP

Flower: Who is that? .

Rain (in a soft, sad, and little voice) : It’s me, the Rain, and I want to come in.

Flower: No, you can’t come in.

Narrator: Then she heard another little TAP, TAP, TAP on the windowpane.

Rain: TAP, TAP, TAP

Flower: Who is there?

Rain: It’s me, the Rain again, and I want to come in!

Flower: No, you can’t come in.

Narrator: Then it was very quiet for a long time. At last, there came a little rustling, whispering sound, all round the window:

Meeting Minutes 4-1-10

During the last YOOTS! Meeting held on April 1st, we decided to run a drop-in craft table during School Vacation Week on Thursday, April 22nd from 1:30 - 3:00. In honor of Earth Day and Spring in general, we will be making Tissue Paper Flowers.

We are also hoping to perform a simple skit about a flower, the sun and the rain for our youngest patrons. The text of the skit was handed out at the meeting but we haven't assigned any parts. Our hope is that we will be able to perform the skit several times, with our YOOTS! taking turns in different roles.

If you would like to be a part of this activity, please let us know. We can give you a copy of the skit if you need it. Just ask!

If you are planning on performing the skit, please wear a plain colored t-shirt that day.

The YOOTS! had a fun meeting last night. We all tried our hand at Rokenbok and are now ready to bring the table out so our younger patrons can play with it periodically under YOOTS! guidance.

We also set out some board games to play while we waited our turn for the remote control trucks.

The YOOTS! decided that our next event will be a Video Game Afternoon during April Vacation Week. That will most likely be held on April 20th from 1:30 to 3 pm. We asked The YOOTS! to think of their favorite books so that we can create an online list of their recommendations for our website.

Our next meeting will be held on April 1st at 7pm.

Rokenbok!

Hey Yoots!
The Children's Room just received a donation of a toy called Rokenbok. What is it? Well, they are remote control vehicles which move around a set on a table. Check out this video of a Rokenbok toy in action:

As you can see, these toys are pretty cool, but I think that if we left it out unattended, it would probably end up broken. I was thinking that some of you might be interested in volunteering to man the Rokenbok Table on a certain day/time. Basically, you would stay by the table and show the kids how to use it while making sure that no one was overly rough with the setup. I am going to set up the Rokenbok up at our next YOOTS! meeting so we can try it out and see if this is something you'd be interested in doing.

Meeting Minutes 2-4-2010

Thanks to everyone who attended last night's meeting!

We decided to run our drop-in craft table for our younger library visitors on Tuesday, February 16th from 10am to 3 PM.

YOOTS! can volunteer to man the table for an hour or two throughout the day. We decided that our theme would be Chinese New Year. We will be making Chinese lanterns. We will also be setting out coloring sheets with animals from the Chinese Zodiac Calendar. The YOOTS! can help our younger patrons determine which animal they were born under.

We also discussed holding a game night at our next YOOTS! Meeting on March 4th. We will set out some simple games and hopefully have a video game system set up to play with.

When all of our business was taken care of, we got our creative juices really flowing by making robots out of some yummy treats! Click on the picture below to see more Robot-Making:

We had a great meeting last Thursday. We discussed programs and events that we might like to work on. Once again, our YOOTS! are full of great ideas!

We decided to run a drop-in craft table for our younger library visitors during February Vacation. Chris and Amy will get the craft supplies together and YOOTS! can volunteer to man the table for an hour or two throughout the day. The actual date of the craft table will be determined at our next YOOTS! meeting.

We also talked about having a Game Afternoon for YOOTS! and friends during February Vacation.

We had a very productive meeting last Thursday. More palm leaves were created and placed on the trees. Max's were cut out. Monster Views were cut and paw prints were pasted. The monster bean bag toss cans were created.

12-3 Meeting Re-Cap

Thanks to everyone who was able to make it to our meeting last night! If you weren't able to attend, join us

We've added a link to the right which has photos of The YOOTS! in action. Check it out. We will be adding more photos to this area as we get them, so be sure to give it a look now and then.

We worked on our palm trees and cut out noses for wild thing puppets. We were also gluing footprints onto paper which we may use to form a path around the room. Another craft we worked on was cutting out the wild thing silhouettes which the kids will use to put inside their "telescopes".
We've hung some of the vines we made at the last meeting. Children who visit the library are now adding leaves with their names to them. By December 29th, the library is going to look really WILD!

We're hoping this will generate some buzz about the event and serve as a reminder to everyone that something FUN is on it's way.

Thanks to everyone who joined us for our 2nd YOOTS! meeting. We had another great turnout with several new members this week! Christine and I are really impressed with all of the enthusiasm the YOOTS! have for making our "Where the Wild Things Are" party this December a success! We are all excited to continue our work at our next meeting on Thursday, December 3rd at 7 PM .

Sign me up! I'll be there on 12/3!

Here are The MINUTES:
At this meeting we began working on our palm trees. We now have 8 bases complete with bark. Next time we will be working on attaching the leaves. We also worked on making some of the many vines we will require for decorations. Some of the kids twisted the vines while others cut out the leaves. We will be assembling them closer to the actual party.

11-12 Meeting Recap

Thanks to everyone who joined us for our first YOOTS! meeting. We had a great turnout! Christine and I are amazed at all the fabulous ideas the YOOTS! came up with for our "Where the Wild Things Are" party this December. We are all excited to get started and decided our next meeting will be Thursday, November 19th at 7 PM to get rolling. We will begin creating our "life-size" palm trees.

MINUTES:
We talked about many different crafts and games. The YOOTS! are looking into getting a couple of mini-trampolines and wagons to be used at the event. Here are some of the great ideas that were tossed around:

Staring contest
Painting windows in Children's Room
Monster foot print path
Setting up Max's Room to be viewed as people enter (would need a small bed, night table)
Sail boat races using boats the kids make themselves
Palm trees using toilet paper rolls
Display some wild things like a bearded dragon, lizard, crayfish (Mr. Heyman?)
Obstacle race using vines
Collecting monster stories and writing reviews to be posted on the wall
Monster costumes or crowns for the YOOTS! volunteers
Puppet Theater
Monster Feet Race
Make Monster Claws
Awarding prizes for tickets won at games (i.e. Ugly dolls, Wild Things T-shirts, books, movie passes, Wild Things DVD or IOU, Monster Decorating Kit, Moon Sand)

We are looking for kids in grades 4-6 who would like to get involved in library-related activities. If you are interested in meeting at the library to discuss, prepare for and participate in Children's Programs or just to let us know what you'd like to see at the library, please join us! Bring a friend!

This will be our first meeting, so we'll spend some time getting to know each other and then we'll talk about our upcoming 'Where the Wild Things Are' event scheduled for this December.
